Research that works for developing countries and Australia

ACIAR-funded courses

The central objective of the Training Program is to build the research capacity of agricultural research institutions in partner countries by providing discipline-specific and broader training opportunities for partner country researchers. The majority of training provided by ACIAR takes place within individual research projects, and can include ‘on-the job’ training in specialised techniques in Australia for partner-country project scientists. Sponsorship to enable some of these scientists to attend specialised short training courses is also provided where applicable.

Training managed and funded by ACIAR falls into three categories:

  • Postgraduate fellowships (John Allwright Fellowship and John Dillon Fellowship Schemes);
  • Short-term cross-discipline training courses for ACIAR project staff, and
  • Training courses provided through the ATSE Crawford Fund for staff from ACIAR-funded projects.

There is a preference for postgraduate and short-course training for scientists from Mekong countries (Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia), Indonesia, Philippines, East Timor, PNG and the Pacific Islands, but scientists from other ACIAR partner countries can also be involved.

Project-related non-award training supported by ACIAR

ACIAR conducts project-related training designed to advance the skills of research scientists in developing countries.  The courses do not result in attendees receiving any sort of award, but are designed to build skills that support their research career, and also their ability to publish works in English.

Course Participation

How to apply?

Eight to ten weeks prior to course commencement ACIAR Project Leaders are sent a nomination request seeking participants. The aim is to gather a group of participants from different disciplines to enhance the learning experience. Only successful nominees will be contacted by ACIAR and informed of the course details.

Am I eligible to attend?

Only persons currently working on ACIAR projects are eligible to apply. All applicants must go through the Project Leader for endorsement.

Cross Program Training Courses - 2008/2009

The on-going program of Indonesian training courses funded and managed through SADI will continue in 2008/09. Due to funding constraints, the ACIAR training committee is holding off from committing to additional courses for 2008/09. This will be reviewed in Spring 2008 in light of funding projections at that time.
