Dr Christian Roth

Christian Roth is Research Program Manager for the Land and Water Resources program. The Program focuses on water management and the interface between agriculture and environmental quality, with a broad scale concentration on these issues.

Dr Roth has a PhD in soil physics from the University of Göttingen, Germany, where he also obtained a degree as Diplom-Agraringenieur (agricultural sciences). Early in his career he worked in southern Brazil as part of the German Agency of Technical Assistance (GTZ) project on erosion control in mixed cropping systems, using no-tillage techniques. After returning to Germany, Dr Roth worked for over ten years in a lecturing and research position in tropical soil science and in soil physics with the Department of Soil Science, Institute of Ecology at the Technical University of Berlin. In 1996 he immigrated to Australia to join CSIRO in Townsville as a principal research scientist in soil hydrology. Subsequently Dr Roth was appointed research group leader of the Tropical Land and Water Management for Sustainable Land Use research group at CSIRO Land and Water, and went on to lead the Tropical Land and Water Management Program until 2000, before becoming the Regional Coordinator for the CSIRO Water for Healthy Country Flagship program. Since 1998 he was also acting Officer-in-Charge of CSIRO’s Davies Laboratory. Dr Roth has produced over 150 publications and research reports, focusing on erosion processes and control, tillage and soil management and soil hydrology.
