Reforestation is recognised as an urgent need in the Philippines following the clearing of most of the native forest cover. Large-scale tree planting efforts have, however, been much less successful than hoped. Research has identified the reasons for this disappointing outcome, and provided the basis for successful tree establishment even on severly degraded sites.
