Fire is part of traditional land management in eastern Indonesia, but it was one of the three major problems identified in a study undertaken by AusAID in the Indonesian forestry sector. Fire can lead to invasion of grazing lands by shrubs, atmospheric pollution, impacts on soil and water conservation, and destroy lives, property and forest reserves. This project will define the nature, extent and socioeconomic impacts of fire regimes in the savanna regions of eastern Indonesia (particularly in relation to small-scale agricultural and forestry enterprises) and the northern savanna regions of Australia. Project scientists will travel throughout eastern Indonesia to gather information and establish links with current activities relating to land management. They will then coordinate a workshop to review fire management in eastern Indonesia and northern Australia, based around the following topics: key fire management issues; methodology for future research and training programs; the problem of regional fire haze.
