Project Background and Objectives

Jembrana disease is considered a problem unique to Indonesia. However, nucleotide sequencing has confirmed that Jembrana disease virus (the cause of Jembrana disease) is a lentivirus that is similar to, but distinguiable from, bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) isolated in the USA. This small project aims to utilise BIV to prepare an alternative Jembrana disease vaccine. Molecular genetic techniques were developed for the detection of the virus in Indonesia and the technology transferred to the Bali Cattle Disease Investigation Unit.
