Project Budget: $1,014,060Project Duration: 01/06/2008 - 31/05/2013ACIAR Research Program Manager Dr T K Lim Project Overview Coffee, which is important to PNG and Indonesia both economically and socially, is being threatened by the most serious pest, Hypothenemus hampei known as coffee berry borer (CBB). In Indonesia, where 96% of coffee is planted by smallholders, CBB has infested 920,000 ha and this is leading to an annual production loss of 15-20%. PNG is under threat because the pest is present in Wamena and Oksibil districts of Papua Province of Indonesia - respectively 200 km and 50 km from the PNG border. This project aims to prepare stakeholders in Sulawesi, Papua and PNG to manage and prevent incursion of CBB for continued productivity of coffee plantings. The project scientists will apply CABI's vast experience in management of the pest in Africa and Latin America. They will introduce better integrated pest management where the pest is present, and methods of systematic prevention and incursion where it is absent. |
