    Project Background and Objectives

Aphids and the plant viruses transmitted by some species cause major crop losses in the South Pacific region. Some crops have experienced substantial damage through direct effects and virus diseases (e.g. bananas throughout the region and cucurbits in Tonga). This small project aims to produce an illustrated handbook detailing information on the aphid pests of the South Pacific with notes on species distribution, pest status, viruses transmitted by each species, crop losses, host range, associated ants, known natural enemies and potential biological control agents so that crop managers can make pest management decisions.
