Project Background and Objectives

Pacific island nations need to establish effective preharvest control of fruit flies in order to increase horticultural production for local consumption and export. This project follows on from Project 8920, which generated a large body of information on pest fruit flies of the region. Project activities will include training people from the three partner countries to carry out host fruit surveys and identify both flies and host plants. Project scientists will tackle some of the difficult taxonomic problems and expand the regional database of fruit flyhost fruit information. They will also provide bait spray and advise on field control trials in orchards.
