    Project Background and Objectives

Australian trees are of considerable social, economic and environmental significance in the tropics, warm temperate and Mediterranean regions of the world. Plantations of at least 8 million ha of eucalypts, 1 million ha of acacias and 1 million ha of casuarinas have been established mostly in developing countries to help meet the need for industrial wood, domestic building material, fuelwood, soil stabilisation and non-wood products. This small project aims to provide certified seeds to developing country institutions so that they may establish seed orchards, and also provide them with up-to-date information on selection, improvement, silviculture and management of plantations. In addition, the project provides training courses for recipients of seeds.
