Yet, for forest species few studies have been undertaken that identify and quantify such risks and develop strategies and techniques to minimize them. Technical guidelines will contribute to raising awareness, among scientists working in forestry germplasm collecting and distribution, of the risks in introducing destructive pests associated with moving different types of forest tree germplasm. An expert consultation meeting would provide a much needed forum to collate existing knowledge on risks as well as develop detection and treatment procedures for pests in Eucalyptus spp. germplasm. The economically significant Eucalyptus species are among the most important multi-purpose trees. The species play a significant role in germplasm exchange/trade between Australian and its Asian neighbours and are also prominent in various afforestation programmes in Africa and Asia. The expert consultation workshop will collate existing knowledge and examine procedures to treat for pests in Eucalyptus spp. germplasm disseminate their findings in the form of technical guidelines readily accessible to scientists in developed and developing countries. Project Outcomes The expert consultation to develop Technical Guidelines for the Safe Movement of Eucalyptus Germplasm was held in Bangkok from October 9 to 12, 1995 and attended by 18 participants, 9 of them funded by the ACIAR grant. 'Technical guidelines for the Safe Movement of Eucalyptus spp Germplasm' and an additional report 'Eucalyptus pests and diseases: Report of a meeting 9-12 October 1995, Bangkok, Thailand' were sent to ACIAR on September 18. |
