Project Background and Objectives

Natural forests are diminishing due to unsustainable collection of forest materials. Also, tree planting is not part of the cultural heritage of many rural communities in the tropics. This project aims to identify native species that could be included into local agroforestry systems and land rehabilitation projects. Scientists will identify and collect propagating material of several traditionally used tree species. They will cultivate these species and monitor growth in Australia and Indonesia. Also, they will further train scientists from Indonesian Botanic gardens in ethnobotanical survey techniques, manuscript preparation, plant propagation and measurement of utility.
