Project Background and Objectives

Mangoes in storage can suffer high levels of wastage. This project examined the principal mango cultivars and some other important tropical fruits of Australia and Southeast Asia to establish their principal characteristics in storage. Studies included storage and handling investigations in northern Australia, and flavour evaluation and sensory studies at CSIRO in Ryde NSW. Studies covered chemical composition, postharvest respiration and ethylene evolution of different fruits, and physiological and chemical measurements of fruit at different stages of maturity and ripening under varying conditions. The scientists also studied storage and packing and investigated several postharvest diseases and their causes.
