    Project Background and Objectives

ACIAR's Animal Health Program has identified the policy and economic environment as an important aspect of livestock development in Laos and Cambodia. Therefore it was decided that the Policy Impact Linkages and Assessment Program should commission a thorough review of this environment as a prelude to supporting effective development of several Animal Health projects, namely AH/2005/084 (Improved supply and quality of livestock vaccines in Laos), AH/2005/086 (Best practice control of diseases in cattle, Lao PDR and Cambodia) and AH/2006/025 (Improved risk assessment for transboundary disease in Laos and Cambodia).

    Project Outcomes

This review consisted of two parts: The first reviewed vaccine production, distribution and use in Laos. The second reviewed the cattle and buffalo industry in Cambodia and Laos. The first report has led to a change in strategy for the vaccine project - a small SRA to develop a business case for the Laos Vaccine production company was funded. Both reports have been prepared for publication in the ACIAR's final report series.
