Summary

These are the proceedings of a conference held to assess the need for economic research into increasing fisheries productivity for island nations in the South Pacific region. A number of these nations explained their priorities in fisheries development, and revealed needs for different types of economic assistance for their fishing iondusties. The proceedings contain an economic overview of Pacific Islands fishery resource management, and also presentations on the tuna industry in the Pacific, property rights over marine resources, the prospects for the the inshore fisheries, aspects of marketing, management and development of fisheries, and a framework for a research and development strategy.
