Developing food loss reduction pathways through smart business practices in mango and tomato value chains in Pakistan and Sri Lanka

Maintaining the quality and freshness of fruits and vegetables under humid tropical conditions in these countries is a challenge. Using mango and tomato as focal commodities, this project aims to assess the nature, extent and the underlying causes of food loss in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Adopting a gender-inclusive participatory approach to reducing horticultural food loss in the Pacific

Gender inequality and a lack of gender awareness within value chains in the Pacific have been observed. For instance, in Solomon Islands, women vendors often stay overnight at established markets in unsafe and unhygienic conditions. In Fiji, despite women contributing significantly to agriculture and fishing, men often take control of the decision making. This project aims to investigate and remediate food loss in Pacific Island value chains using a gender sensitive participatory approach to widen fruit and vegetable choices for overall improvement of Pacific diets and nutrition.

Policy impact in Lao PDR: from research to practice

The Government of Lao PDR is increasingly seeking evidence to support policy development. This project is about finding out what the determinants of successful translation from research finding to adopted policy are, and how research activities and outcomes can be most effectively tailored to this decision-making context.

Building institutions for the sustainable management of artesian groundwater in Myanmar

Developing and testing inclusive institutional arrangements and supporting a targeted public information campaign to restore artesian pressure in the Central Dry Zone (CDZ) of Myanmar as well as addressing inequities between water users to enhance equitable impact Some 10.12 million people reside in the CDZ of Myanmar. Around 43% live in poverty and 40-50% of the rural population is landless. Most land owners are small holder/marginal farmers. The extreme variability and intensity of dry season rainfall are major constraints to rural livelihoods.

Soil management in Pacific Islands: investigating nutrient cycling and development of the soils portal

Commercial farming is an important source of employment and export revenue, while subsistence farming underpins food security for most rural areas. This project aimed to ensure soil knowledge was enhanced in the Pacific Island Countries Territories and provided a reliable foundation for sustainable intensification of agricultural systems.

Improving soil and water management and crop productivity of dryland agriculture systems of Aceh and NSW

This project aimed to increase the crop yields of dryland farmers in Aceh to help them make a better living.  Rural poverty in dryland farming areas is a major challenge to the development of the agriculture sector in Aceh.  Water and nutrient availability limit the productivity of dryland soil, but there is pressure to increase production. Due to lack of capital, farmers apply very little or no fertiliser to dryland crops, resulting in yields being significantly below their potential.

Enhancing community-based commercial forestry in Indonesia

This project aimed to identify how commercial forestry can increase the incomes of smallholders and scale out the broader benefits of commercial forestry to local communities and industries.  Millions of small-scale farmers in Indonesia cultivate trees. However, most smallholders fail to realise the full commercial potential of the forests they manage or the trees they plant – leading to supplies of poor-quality wood to the industry.
