FS2017 - CIM/2013/011 - Indo-Australian project on root and establishment traits for greater water-use efficiency in wheat - FACTSHEET

Wheat farmers in drier regions of India and Australia suffer from low yields, and from an unpredictable crop production and income.

This project aims to partially buffer farmers from this uncertainty, by providing breeders in the rain fed and minimally irrigated zones of India and Australia with germplasm that require less water, but still produce high yields.

Some of this germplasm establish better under difficult conditions, whereas others have root systems capable of extracting more water from deeper in the soil. Breeders will also be provided with tools that help them recognise and select these characteristics.
