Development of a market-driven biosecure beef production system in Lao PDR

This project aims to promote the supply of beef animals into the developing market chain for Lao smallholders, specifically the expanding consumer markets of Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Savannakhet and, importantly, northern Vietnam (Hanoi) and southern China.
Smallholder cattle and buffalo farmers in Lao PDR are gaining access to domestic and international beef markets in the Greater Mekong Subregion. This improves rural livelihoods and alleviates poverty, but the supply of beef animals is increasingly under stress due to disease, poor productivity and reproduction, and undeveloped markets.
This project will address identified gaps in smallholders and traders' knowledge, including gaps in large ruminant husbandry, health and marketing practices.
