Improving technical and institutional capacity to support development of mariculture based livelihoods and industry in New Ireland, Papua New Guinea

This project aims to develop a mariculture sector in Papua New Guinea and to further build capacity within country partner organisations and coastal communities to support this development.
Papua New Guinea's vast coastline supports numerous communities that depend primarily on marine resources for their livelihoods. Communities often cannot maximise the full economic potential and livelihood opportunities this environment provides. The sea cucumber fishery has traditionally provided income to local communities, but overfishing of stocks resulted in a nationwide moratorium. As a result, economic activities are urgently needed as alternatives to the sea cucumber fishery, to provide livelihood opportunities for Papua New Guinean coastal communities.
