Description and risk assessment of the bycatch communities in the Gulf of Papua prawn fishery

This project aims to improve the management of the Gulf of Papua prawn fishery by adopting an ecosystem-based fishery management approach and to demonstrate sustainable fishing prao ctices to access international markets while increasing the potential value of the fishery for Papua New Guinea.
The Papua New Guinea National Fisheries Authority (NFA) wants to obtain Turtle Excluder Device accreditation and Marine Stewardship Council accreditation for the Gulf of Papua Prawn Fishery. This would allow the fishery to export product to countries, such as the USA, that have import restrictions on countries that do not conform to bycatch reduction standards and commitments.
This project will guide policy decisions that will improve fishery management and ecosystem sustainability by better understanding how prawn trawling affects bycatch communities and their sustainability.
