Developing profitable dairy and sheep meat production systems in central Tibet - China

This project aims is to improve the livelihoods of smallholder livestock farmers in the cropping and agro-pastoral areas of central Tibet by increasing dairy and sheep meat production.
Agriculture and the human population are concentrated in the cropping and agro-pastoral zones of central and southern Tibet. Most farm households rely on producing grain crops and raising animals for their livelihoods. Production and household incomes are low, and these rural households' per capita income (CNY 6578) is below the national average (CNY 8896). Previous ACIAR projects established that inadequate nutrition causes poor livestock production. The challenge is to improve livestock nutrition without reducing grain production or compromising the condition of pastoral areas.
