Overview

This report, the 14th in our series of adoption studies, documents the adoption results for four ACIAR projects completed in 2012–13. The studies involved three partner countries— Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Indonesia. The projects involved wheat in Bangladesh, broiler chickens in PNG, cattle in Lombok, Indonesia, and forestry in PNG.

  • A forestry project in PNG developed genetic resources and new knowledge of agroforestry systems. The adoption study found this improved the livelihoods of landowners in the Upper Markham Valley and Western Province; and more broadly, the project has had substantial indirect benefits, increasing the capacity of industry, institutions and government.
  • The adoption study revealed that the Bangaldesh project focused on improving wheat and mungbean production led to the adoption of new varieties, as well as increased farmer numbers and crop production in southern cropping areas.
  • In PNG, the study showed that growth in broiler chicken production was limited by a local shortfall of beneficial nutritional concentrates identified by the project, however the potential to increase broiler, and layer hen, production remains.
  • Several years on, the Lombok livestock project is supporting the Indonesian Government's goal of increasing self-sufficiency, through practical improvement in livestock production and profitability, as well as through changes to government policy based on knowledge gained by the project.
