Overview
This small research activity aimed to identify and quantify viruses affecting lentil crops in Nepal. Lentils are a crucial crop, providing a significant source of protein and income for the population. However, lentil production is threatened by various viral diseases.
The project involved extensive field surveys across Nepal, testing lentil plants for the presence of viruses using Tissue Blot Immuno Assay (TBIA). The main viruses identified were luteoviruses and Pea seed-borne mosaic virus (PSbMV). The study highlighted the need for further research and the development of virus diagnostic capacities within Nepal to support the national program and improve virus resistance in lentil varieties.
Nepal Agricultural Research Council staff and university students also received basic training in executing virus surveys and have been acquainted with diagnosing viruses using the TBIA technique.
