Overview

Our support to Eastern and Southern Africa fills a niche not addressed by many donor organisations; agricultural research-for-development. The focus is aimed at reducing poverty and increasing food security through an agriculture-led integrated framework of development.

The ACIAR regional strategy focuses on promoting regional collaboration while helping create new opportunities, particularly for Africa's smallholder farmers. Our work in the region has been in operation and delivering impacts for over three decades.

Eastern and Southern Africa priorities

  • Sharing irrigated farming systems and science-related research from learnings from Australian dryland.
  • Aim to increase investment in innovation to unlock the potential of smallholder agriculture.
  • Address the impacts of climate change, improve sustainable crop and livestock systems and plant biosecurity in order to stimulate commercial options for smallholder farmers.
  • Continue co-investment with development partners, notably the Canadian International Development Research Center.
