Climate Change

The Climate Change Program progresses the science and practice of how to transform food systems and livelihoods that are under the most pressure to adapt or to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Systems transformation requires a strong focus on social and institutional change, supported by technical analyses, to create fundamentally new ways in which livelihoods are sustained and food is produced. The research strategy aims to progress the science and practice of 3 pillars that support transformation:

Water

Improving agricultural water management through innovative technical and policy approaches. The Water Program (formerly the Water and Climate Program) addresses the challenge of efficient, sustainable water use to support agricultural production in a context of increasingly uncertain climate, competition from other sectors and declining water quality. The program works to improve agricultural water management through innovative technical and policy approaches under three main themes:

Fisheries

Improving livelihoods from productive aquatic farming systems and sustainable fisheries The Fisheries Program brokers research partnerships to improve food security and fishers’ livelihoods through productive aquatic farming systems and sustainable wild-catch fisheries. It aims to improve human health and wellbeing by making food systems and policies more nutrition-sensitive.

Agribusiness

The Agribusiness Program focuses on research and adoption of innovations to improve business outcomes for smallholder farmers, their communities and their industries at all points along the agricultural, forestry and fisheries value chain.

Critical need for Australian expertise to tackle food systems threats in the Mekong Delta

Two Australian advisory bodies – the Commission for International Agricultural Research and the Policy Advisory Council – recently visited Vietnam to see first-hand the major challenges facing one of the region’s critical food bowls, the 40,500 km2 Mekong Delta.

Learning alliance approaches to scaling out vegetable value chains in the southern Philippines - Final Report

This project aimed to understand how farmer associations in the southern Philippines can be transformed to self directed learning entities through developing social and human capitals With a predominantly rural society with more than 80 percent of the population relying on agriculture for their livelihoods, agriculture is the primary source of income for rural communities in the Philippines, most of whom depend on subsistence farming and fishing for their livelihoods.

Testing and refining the Comprehensive Framework of Response Assessment in the Philippines - Final Report

This project aimed to refine a standardised methodology for response assessment for the sustainable management of land, water, and soils in the Philippines. Project outcomes Stakeholder dialogue with key partners and organisations in the Philippines to understand the scope and application of CFRA, identify case studies as well as develop the theory of change.
