ACIAR in Pakistan: 30 Years of Partnership in Research for Development

ACIAR has supported a program of research collaboration with Pakistan since 1984, with recent projects focused on Pakistan’s key fruit crops (mangoes and citrus), livestock (smallholder dairy), agricultural policy, and agricultural water management. ACIAR works closely with the Government of Pakistan, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), other donor partners, non-government organisations (NGOs) and the Pakistani private sector to provide research and development (R&D) and technical capacity building.

Scoping study for agricultural development policy review for Vietnam food security - final report

This project aimed to perform agriculture-related policy review and analysis in order to create a strong policy framework in Vietnam.  Agriculture is a focus of Vietnam’s economic development. Vietnam’s agricultural sector stands to gain from improved economic efficiency, capitalisation and technology improvement. Acknowledging this situation, the Vietnamese government has issued several groups of agricultural policies which are expected to impact on agricultural and rural development, both directly and indirectly.

TR086 Scoping Study: Evaluation and Targeting of Formal and Informal Capacity Building in ACIAR Training and Research Programs

  Investments in training are reviewed, some approaches to quantifying investments and assessing change in partner countries, institutions and individuals are identified, and options for further action are discussed. Throughout the study there was extensive consultation and feedback within ACIAR and with project leaders and other stakeholders.

ACIAR’s engagement with the private sector - fact sheet

ACIAR has a long track record working with the private sector in agricultural research. Brokering high payoff partnerships with private companies and enterprises in support of Australia’s foreign policy objectives is a core capability for ACIAR. By working to enhance agricultural competitiveness and sustainability, and increasing market access and value-chain efficiencies and effectiveness, ACIAR contributes to economic diplomacy and the aid-for-trade agenda of the Australian Government.

Improving the sustainability of cocoa production in eastern Indonesia through integrated pest, disease and soil management in an effective extension and policy environment - final report

This project addressed two interacting issues: the decline in cocoa productivity on smallholdings and the effects of changes in the value chain and regulatory framework. As in two previous ACIAR projects, CP/2000/102 and SMAR/2005/074, the main focus was on the livelihood of smallholder cocoa growers in Sulawesi and West Papua.

Plausible futures for economic development and structural adjustment – impacts and policy implications for Indonesia and Australia - final report

Indonesia's agricultural economy is in urgent need of assistance to undertake quality policy analysis focused on maintaining sustainable economic growth in the face of growing global economic and environmental pressures. This project will conducted an overview of Indonesian agricultural technologies, policies and associated data that impacted on economic growth and production efficiency in the face of these changes.

Opportunities for the smallholder sandalwood industry in Vanuatu

Sandalwood is one of the world’s most valuable forest products. However, much of the wild-sourced sandalwood has been overharvested. The Vanuatu Government has been implementing measures to foster the sustainable use of sandalwood, including controlling the quantity that can be harvested, requiring value-added processing, and producing sandalwood seedlings for planting by landowners.

Analysis of ACIAR’s returns on investment: appropriateness, efficiency and effectiveness

ACIAR has a long history of assessing the impact of its research and development investments, which provides valuable lessons for improving the selection, design and delivery of projects, as well as demonstrating the value of ACIAR as part of Australia’s international development assistance program.
