Research that works for developing countries and AustraliaDr John Skerritt
Dr Skerritt has a PhD from the University of Sydney, winning the University Medal in 1980 for his Honours year while completing a Bachelor of Science. He was a part-time lecturer while completing his PhD and was Rotary Foundation Fellow at the University of Michigan, prior to joining CSIRO in 1983. At CSIRO he worked as a researcher and research manager in broadacre and horticultural crops, food and environmental science and biotechnology and moving to the joint positions of Senior Principal Research Scientist and Program Leader at the Quality Wheat Cooperative Research Centre. Dr Skerritt has been involved in developing country research and training activities since the late 1980s, has been an invited speaker at more than 80 international scientific and agricultural conferences, a member of several international scientific societies, and won the Edgeworth David Medal of the Royal Society, prizes for research from three Australian scientific societies, CSIRO awards for both research and commercial technology transfer and in 1999 won the international Biotechnology Research Award in Cereal Science. He has authored more than 300 scientific publications and 10 patents. He is a 2003 graduate of the International Senior Executive Programme of London Business School and a 2004 graduate of the Australian New Zealand School of Government Executive Fellows Program. Dr Skerritt has sat on several Boards and is currently a member of the Board of International Water Management Institute and is a Ministerial appointee to the (Australian) Gene Technology Technical Advisory Committee.
