Overview
Agricultural Science 30(2) and 31(1), 2019
ACIAR is proud to host this special issue of Agricultural Science, which focuses on smallholder farming systems in low- and middle-income countries and the contribution that Australian agricultural science is making to improve the productivity, sustainability and resilience of these systems in the Indo-Pacific region.
Australia has an enviable record of achievement in agricultural research and development, and the publisher of this journal, Ag Institute Australia, is a strong advocate of the need for science to continue to underpin the performance of agriculture.
This special issue of Agricultural Science features the work of ACIAR, which is recognised widely as an important part of Australia’s agriculture and innovation system. Public investment in this type of research, through the Australian aid program, and in partnership with countries across our region, has been and continues to be a great investment for Australia.
The skills, insights, networks and experience that Australian scientists build through ACIAR projects are relevant in the country of research and in Australia. If we are to have any hope of feeding the world better and more sustainably, we need to build capabilities in farming systems research, in Australia and overseas.
