Overview

The political instability sparked by the military coup of February 2021 has resulted in Australia’s assistance to Myanmar pivoting to meet the immediate needs of the country's most vulnerable people.

ACIAR has redirected development assistance away from regime entities and does not provide funding directly to the regime. To ensure our support benefits the people who need it most, we work through trusted non-government partners including multilateral and non-government organisations.

ACIAR is not supporting any new research collaborations in Myanmar in 2023–24. However, ACIAR continues to consult with international partners to identify potential collaboration consistent with Australian government guidelines.

Ms Dulce Carandang Simmanivong

Dulce is based in Vientiane, and is responsible for strategic oversight of the Cambodia, and Laos  country programs. Before joining ACIAR in 2015, Dulce managed the rural development portfolio of AusAID/DFAT for six years, working across sectors, including financial inclusion, social protection, non-government organisation cooperation, mine action and rural livelihoods. Before then, she worked in program management positions with the United Nations and civil society organisations, including a farmers’ alliance. Dulce’s past work took her across North and South-East Asia. She earned both her degrees—a Bachelor of Arts (Communications) and a Master of Industrial/Organisational Psychology—at Ateneo de Manila University.
