Overview

This project aimed to improve the sustainability of a large and well developed, but low technology, ornate spiny lobster grow-out industry in Vietnam, and to address the knowledge gap that is limiting the establishment of a P. ornatus grow-out industry in Australia.

With most capture lobster fisheries either fully or more often over-exploited, and in decline, aquaculture appears to be the only long-term way of meeting the insatiable market demand for lobster.

Project outcomes

  • Assessed  the ecological impact of lobster seed collection in Vietnam.
  • Reduced post-capture losses of lobster pueruli.
  • Developed husbandry best-practices for lobster grow-out.
