Improving adoption and scaling of proven beef production technologies in Nusa Tenggara Barat and Kalimantan Selatan

Overview

This project aimed to build on previous research undertaken in eastern Indonesia with a focus on developing integrated village management livestock system technologies.

Indonesia has developed many policies at national and provincial levels to develop the beef sector to increase cattle numbers and import and distribute breeding cows from abroad and from within Indonesia.

In 2020, developing smallholder beef systems remains at the very top of the Ministry of Agriculture’s priorities for the agriculture sector.

This project is picking up where a previous ACIAR project left off, which made good early progress assessing the drivers and impediments to on-farm practice change and wider adoption of proven approaches to improving smallholder cattle production systems. Therefore this project is continuing the promising assessment of alternative approaches to adoption and scaling in Nusa Tenggara Barat and test whether the entire system or individual components of the integrated village management system can be adapted to increase both adoption and scaling.

Project outcomes

  • Identifying and evaluating alternative approaches to adoption and scaling of proven on-farm animal production technologies in Nusa Tenggara Barat and test whether the entire integrated village management system or individual components of the system can be adapted to increase adoption and scaling.
  • Adapting components of the proven integrated village management system as required to ensure suitability of the system to the needs of smallholder farmers in KalSel and establish nodes and a scaling site linked to the scaling research to improve adoption and scaling in KalSel.
  • Scoping the possibility of developing a new beef value chain focused on smallholder farmers who use components of the integrated village management system together with commercial meat processors and wholesalers to deliver quality-assured beef that meets the specifications of high-end consumers in Nusa Tenggara Barat. 
  • Assessing the social and economic context underpinning decision-making processes of smallholder farmers and the socioeconomic impact of the proposed on-farm and value chain interventions.
  • Examining the roles of gender and the extent of women’s engagement in smallholder farmer livestock production and marketing.
