Overview
This project explored the evolution of key soil parameters in the Eastern Gangetic Plains, in a context of proposed cropping intensification. The research took advantage of a network of on-farm trials established by other ACIAR projects such as “Sustainable and Resilient Farming System Intensification” (CSE/2011/077, final report to be published December 2021), and applied crop modelling system APSIM. Key findings on the risk of soil acidification caused by the application of nitrogen (N) fertilisers are reported, with some suggestions for managing the risk.
Better management of N fertiliser can increase financial returns to farmers, while minimising environmental impacts . The report also presents findings on the importance of managing Zn in rice crops. The project did not find significant soil structural effects of zero tillage.
