Seeking to use insect science for sustainable development, icipe looks to ensure food security and improve the overall health of communities by addressing the interlinked problems of poverty, poor health, low agricultural productivity and environmental degradation.

The centre is committed to developing and disseminating environmentally safe, affordable, acceptable and accessible tools and strategies to control insect pests and disease vectors and enable sustainable conservation and utilisation of Africa’s rich biodiversity. As the only international institution in Africa working primarily on arthropods, capacity building of individual researchers and institutions is an integral part of icipe’s research and development activities.

ACIAR has a strategic partnership with icipe that provides broad support to the centre's research activities and capacity-building in low and lower-middle-income countries. Key objectives of the partnership include:

  • use of insect science for sustainable development to ensure food security and improve the overall health of communities in Africa and beyond
  • developing and disseminating environmentally safe, affordable, acceptable and accessible tools and strategies to control insect pests and disease vectors
  • collaboration with and building capacity of third-party partners from the public and private sectors.

ACIAR also invests and collaborates with icipe in other research initiatives to further the uptake and impact of insect technology. These include:

  • A 3-year ACIAR-funded project upscaling the benefits of insect-based animal feed technologies for sustainable agricultural intensification. The project builds on earlier investment in icipe as part of the CultiAF program, co-funded with Canada's International Development Research Centre.
  • A collaboration with AgriFutures Australia, ACIAR and icipe to accelerate insect farming as an emerging industry in Africa and Australia. The Emerging Insect Technology Hub centralises engagement and knowledge sharing around insects as food, animal feed and fertiliser, bringing together industry stakeholders, scientists and investors to discuss issues linked to emerging insect technologies.
