This project helped the Papua New Guinea National Fisheries Authority, the Tourism Promotion Authority, and business and community groups develop and manage an expanded sport fishery.
Locally based sport fisheries in Papua New Guinea could provide stable alternative livelihoods for poor coastal villagers. The industry would provide income to improve food security, and build community resilience to climate change and fluctuations in commodity prices.
This project conducted the research needed to develop a sustainable and resilient locally based sport-fishing industry. It examined the ecology and biology of Black Bass sport-fish resources, and devised protocols to maximise long-term industry viability.
It also investigated potential livelihood costs and benefits and determined the commercialisation needs of a sport-fishing industry in Papua New Guinea.
