Overview

This project aimed to support sustainable aquaculture in Pacific island countries, and assist Indigenous aquaculture in tropical Australia.

The research supported the Regional Aquaculture Strategy of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community and included 26 mini-projects addressing critical bottlenecks and opportunities in research, technology transfer and capacity building.

The project included culture of ornamental species, pearls and pearl oysters, freshwater fish and prawns, mud crab, sea cucumber and seaweed. It also supported aquaculture through improved business skills, feed production, culture system design and disease testing. Benefits were seen to be immediate, particularly enhancing aquaculture technical skills and the professional capacity of researchers, technicians and extension officers in countries in the Pacific islands.
