ACIAR works in close collaboration with research partners across the Indo-Pacific and Africa regions to deliver its high-level objectives. ACIAR’s objective six focuses on building scientific and policy capabilities within our partner countries. 

We respond to the needs of our global partners and alumni networks through informal and formal collaborations. This includes targeted and integrated capacity strengthening initiatives that provide upskilling opportunities to individuals and partner organisations.

ACIAR Capacity Development Investments

ACIAR Alumni – ACIAR supports continued networking and learning for its Alumni through a diverse range of opportunities.

ACIAR Learn – ACIAR’s flagship online learning platform provides bespoke Research for Development training and fosters collaborative connections between agricultural researchers in our network. ACIAR Learn offers a range of courses relevant to the effective and efficient management of research projects. ACIAR Learn is open to ACIAR’s alumni and ACIAR-supported research project teams.

John Allwright Fellowship (JAF) - ACIAR supports scholars to undertake Masters by Research and PhDs at Australian Universities through the Australia Awards. JAF is a highly competitive opportunity that targets candidates from ACIAR projects to undertake Higher Degree Research in agricultural sciences. ACIAR enhances the JAF experience through the provision of additional support and learning opportunities.

John Dillon Fellowship (JDF) – ACIAR supports leadership and management upskilling for individuals in our partner network through JDF. This bespoke program supports the strengthening of leadership, policy, and communications skills for the management and dissemination of research.

Meryl Williams Fellowship (MWF) –  ACIAR delivers a highly competitive and targeted fellowship program for women leaders in agricultural research. This initiative is designed to strengthen the leadership skills, confidence, knowledge, resilience and capabilities of fellows.

Pacific Agricultural Scholarships and Support (PASS) - ACIAR jointly delivers PASS with its partners at the Fiji National University and the University of South Pacific. PASS supports Pacific Island Country scholars to undertake agricultural research at the Master and PhD level, providing scholarships, academic support, work placements and career development opportunities for researchers. 

Research Projects – ACIAR integrates capacity development within its research projects and collaborative partnerships. ACIAR’s approach reflects the strength of our partnerships and maximises mutual benefit achieved through international research collaborations. We foster mutual learning and skills exchanges, respond to capacity strengthening needs of partners, and co-design and co-deliver research.
