Global burden of animal disease initiative: Indonesia case study

Overview

This project aimed to pilot the Global Burden of Animal Diseases framework in Indonesia, resulting in information to assist improved prioritisation of resource allocation for animal health, centred on the needs of smallholder farmers.

Given that animal health is integral to societal wellbeing, better understanding and coordination of animal health investments is critical to support decision-making and achieve a One Health vision. The Global Burden of Animal Diseases (GBADs) programme is a worldwide initiative aimed at building a standardized data sharing platform to systematically collect epidemiological and economic data to assess the overall societal cost of livestock diseases in different production systems around the world.

Project outcomes

  • Encouraging local ownership and input into the development of the GBADs framework in Indonesia.
  • Collating datasets and generate improved knowledge of livestock population, biomass, and economic value to Indonesia to facilitate policy and national investment decisions under the GBADs framework.
  • Estimating the animal health loss envelope for specified livestock production systems in Indonesia with methodological input from GBADs workstreams.
  • Developing south-south capacity for animal health economics through collaboration with other countries implementing the GBADs framework at the same time.

Animal health: a cornerstone for public health
