Research need
This small research activity will identify priorities for building climate-resilient food systems in South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific through a comprehensive desktop review and engagement with regional and national stakeholders.
The Asia-Pacific region is facing significant challenges due to climate change, global economic uncertainty, and demographic and technological shifts. Australia's international development program aims to advance a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. By supporting these regions to improve the climate resilience of their agrifood systems, through increasing food and water security, Australia can contribute to a more stable future for all.
An integrated approach to improving climate resilience in agricultural communities of the Indo-Pacific region is considered essential, along with the need for research-driven, inclusive and community-based interventions. The Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Water-constrained Communities (CRACE) program, a collaboration between DFAT and ACIAR, aims to build on existing knowledge and experience to inform policies and programs. The program will also facilitate activities to scale evidence-based solutions for enhancing the climate resilience of agricultural communities and households in inclusive, locally led ways. This activity supports the program by providing co-designed solutions that are tailored to the unique environmental and social contexts of each region. The solutions will link to previous and current investments by ACIAR, DFAT and other partners.
The final project report will present research investment opportunities, focusing on the scalability of existing or past ACIAR projects and scalable technologies. Where possible, it will include risk analysis, potential mitigations and capacity development needs. The report will also include opportunities for upscaling relevant activities by other organisations.
