Overview

Growing and selling galip nuts is a promising enterprise opportunity for smallholder families in Papua New Guinea. Best practice knowledge about collecting and processing galip was developed by ACIAR-funded research, particularly the project 'Enhancing private sector-led development of the Canarium industry in Papua New Guinea - Phase 2' (FST/2017/038). Many of the people who sell galip are women who collect with their children.

This bi-lingual book shares information from the project through a new title in the 'Maria's family' series. The series was developed in 2014 as part of another ACIAR-funded project that focused on women’s business skills in Papua New Guinea. The research found that women farmers in the Highlands and East New Britain needed more training to successfully market their produce, as well as to plan and budget for their agricultural and families’ futures.

Through 'Maria’s family', the books present key farm business messages for smallholders in a format that enables parents to engage in reading activities with their children. In many cases, the books also help develop literacy skills of both adults and children.

Hard copies of the book are distributed to community organisations and learning groups in rural areas of Papua New Guinea. Hard copies are also available by order from this web page.
