Overview
This project aimed to enhance the cocoa industry, a significant income source for many smallholder farmers in Bougainville. By improving cocoa production and quality, the project helped increase farmers' incomes and contributed to the overall economic development of the region.
The project also focused on promoting healthy diets and food safety among local communities. This was important for improving the nutritional status and overall health of the population. The research emphasised sustainable farming practices, such as soil fertility management and pest control, which are essential for maintaining the long-term productivity of the land.
Bougainville cocoa gained international recognition by winning gold at the Cocoa of Excellence competition. This not only boosted the cocoa's reputation but also opened up new market opportunities for local farmers. The project involved training and capacity-building activities for farmers, which equipped them with the knowledge and skills needed to adopt improved farming practices and technologies.
The main outcomes of the project included:
- Establishment of nurseries and budwood gardens to provide high-quality planting material.
- Implementing improved cocoa farming practices such as pruning, weed management, and pest control.
- Development of a mobile application to assist farmers with cocoa cultivation.
- Promotion of healthy diets and food safety among the local communities.
- Improvement of soil fertility and management practices.
