A guide to the rotary veneer processing of coconut palms

This guide draws on several ACIAR projects, led by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. It provides valuable information about the characteristics of coconut woody tissue and different processing equipment that can be used to produce rotary veneer. It also provides guidance on how to process coconut stems into veneer, along with the techniques to dry and grade the veneer sheets. Finally, it describes the production and testing of high-value engineered ‘cocowood’ products suitable for a range of appearance and structural applications.

Enhancing livelihoods in Lao PDR through environmental services and planted-timber products

This report provides an exploration of the concept of payments for environmental services (financial benefits to land managers who, through improved practices, enhance environmental services such as carbon sequestration, protection of water quality and biodiversity conservation) and the value chains for wood products in Lao PDR. Both these topics are intrinsically linked by their focus on the forests of Laos and their aim of improving livelihoods for thousands of Lao people, many of whom live below the poverty line.

Agroforestry and animal production for human welfare

Proceedings of an international symposium held in association with the 7th AAAP Animal Science Congress, Bali. Indonesia. 11-16 July 1994. This paper reviews the animal production potential of agroforestry systems. Factors influencing animal productivity include the forage contribution from tree and non-tree sources, competition between tree and understorey, compatibility between tree crop and animals, and the service role of the tree in ameliorating the microclimate of the animal.
