This project increased catchment productivity, made dryland areas more productive, and improved rural people's livelihoods. Investment in soil and water conservation and associated technologies is critical for increasing food security and improving rural livelihoods in Afghanistan, which lacks trained personnel to support agricultural research and development.

Inle Lake is a place of significant ecological, social and cultural value. It is listed as an ASEAN Heritage site and on the Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.  The Lake and its catchments are a vital part of the economy of Shan State and the nation, providing many goods and services that support the diverse livelihoods of its agricultural, fisheries, forestry and tourism communities.  It also acts as the main water source for the Law Pi Ta hydroelectricity power plant.

Floriculture has been proposed as an ideal basis for sustainable enterprise development for resource-poor communities - whether remote, rural or peri-urban - in the Pacific Islands, Papua New Guinea and northern Australia. World trade in floricultural products (live ornamental plants, as well as cut-flowers and foliage) continues to increase and there are recognised market opportunities - so far largely unrealised - for the supply of novel products based on the rich biodiversity of the Pacific and Australian region.
