Improving the Papua New Guinea balsa value chain to enhance smallholder livelihoods - Final report

This project aimed to enhance the livelihoods of smallholder balsa growers, improve value recovery for balsa growers and processors, and provide the basis for strengthening the position of Papua New Guinea in the international balsa market. With an estimated 1500 smallholder balsa growers, and a workforce of 2500 – 3000 engaged in balsa harvest, transport, processing and export, these activities operate under the regulatory oversight of the PNG Forest Authority, which also plays an ‘honest broker’ role in transactions between companies and smallholders. Balsa

This project aimed to assess the competitiveness, resilience, and adaptability of smallholder livestock production systems in Southeast Asia, so that they remain an engine of agricultural and human development.  Livestock are critical to farmers’ incomes, nutrition and food security, livelihoods and resilience in much of Southeast Asia.

Scoping for a forest biosecurity network in South East Asia

With countries in the South-East Asian region having experienced significant improvements in their levels of development, along with strong growth in their agriculture and fisheries sectors, this project was the first step toward the development of a biosecurity network and underpinning research focused on forest biosecurity, ensuring collaborative surveillance, monitoring and information-sharing to enhance biosecurity preparedness across the region.

Policy analysis for forest plantations in Lao PDR and Vietnam

This project aimed to inform and engage policy makers for forest plantations in Lao PDR and Viet Nam to improve regional and national economic impacts of forest plantations. Governments in Lao PDR and Viet Nam aim for national development through building human capacity, developing industry and sustaining the environment. Forest plantations play a key role in achieving these development aims, and both countries have policies to increase plantation areas to support national goals.

Closing the loop between agriculture and wastewater discharge: A novel technique for turning wastewater into fertiliser in the Pacific

This project aimed to assess the potential to ‘close the loop’ in Pacific Island agriculture by converting domestic and agricultural wastewater into a stable, pathogen-free, organic fertiliser. Agricultural communities throughout the Pacific Islands are reliant on expensive imported fertilisers. Ironically, nutrient-rich domestic wastewaters are discharged into groundwater and coastal lagoons where they degrade water quality and impact human health.

Philippines smallholder dairy: landscape analysis and research priorities

This project aimed to undertake a landscape analysis of the Philippines smallholder dairy industry and develop a series of research priorities which will include potential research partners for a future ACIAR project. The Philippines has a population of 108 million people with studies estimating 53% of the population to be moderately to severely food insecure. However, with high economic growth and an emerging middle class, this is changing, particular in regards to food consumption.

This project aimed to enhance the capacity of household agroforestry systems and community forests to generate livelihoods and food security in the mid-hills region of Nepal. Nepal is the 17th poorest country in the world; 41% of the population are under-nourished and 30 of its 75 districts are food insecure. 66% of the population live off a combination of agriculture and forest products.
