A new model for Vietnam’s economic growth in 2021-2030 and vision to 2050: Quantitative assessment

This project aimed to quantitatively evaluate the possible outcomes of applying a new economic growth model in Vietnam during the 2021-2030 decade with a vision towards 2050. Rapid economic growth and escaping the middle-income trap are a top-priority objective of Vietnam. The country has adopted a ‘dual economy’ model where some geographical regions and economic sectors have been prioritized, and they can have a higher level of development compared to the rest of the economy.

Wet markets – not so cut and dry

Markets have been bringing people, food and animals together for centuries. It is a tradition that endures in many forms across the world today. In advanced economies, traditional markets have been increasingly replaced by large supermarkets with fresh food and animal products wrapped in plastic packaging. For many low and middle-income countries however, traditional markets are still the predominate food-source for billions of people, particularly those living below the poverty line.

Small-scale fisheries in Indonesia: benefits to households, the roles of women, and opportunities for improving livelihoods

This project reviewed information and methodologies for evaluating how small-scale fisheries and aquaculture contribute to household livelihoods in Indonesian coastal communities and review the roles of women in small-scale fisheries. It also investigated cases where attempts have been made to enhance the livelihoods of small-scale fisheries communities by strengthening or diversifying existing livelihoods or introducing alternative ones. The project evaluated the effectiveness of initiatives to enhance small-scale fisheries livelihoods and their effect on women.

Alien invasive fruit flies in Southern Africa: Implementation of a sustainable integrated pest management program to combat their menaces

Mangoes are an important fruit crop in sub-Saharan Africa as a source of nutritious food, employment, and opportunities for livelihood improvement. However, high infestation of insect pests, especially fruit flies (native and invasive), hamper mango productivity in the region. This project aimed to adapt and promote the wide-scale adoption of integrated pest management interventions in Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Improving the Papua New Guinea balsa value chain to enhance smallholder livelihoods

Balsa (Ochroma pyramidale) is a fast-growing plantation tree grown by both companies and smallholders in East New Britain Province (ENB) of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Balsa is a relatively low labour-input crop with competitive returns, and so adoption by smallholders has increased as the area under cocoa production has decreased. The ENB balsa industry is entirely export-oriented, producing 9% of the world’s processed balsa.

Scoping study to assess constraints and opportunities for sustaining the tank irrigation ecosystems and smallholder livelihoods in East India and Nepal

In eastern India and Nepal tanks (small reservoirs) are still used for irrigation, livestock and domestic purposes, but fisheries are emerging as their primary usage. Competition between irrigation and fisheries often creates a rift within communities, resulting in management issues that directly contribute to poor tank maintenance.
