This impact assessment study sought to understand the influence of two major aquaculture‑based livelihood projects through the lens of 40 mini-projects derived from the major projects. This novel approach to research and development delivery was a collaboration between ACIAR project leaders and stakeholders in Pacific island countries.

This impact assessment focused on two projects supporting tambak redevelopment in Aceh, after the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004. One project aimed to lift technical capacity of the Balai Perikanan Budidaya Air Payau (BPBAP) and the second worked in partnership with BPBAP to advance aquaculture rehabilitation. ACIAR teams undertook training of BPBAP staff to develop capacity and knowledge on rebuilding and improving the design of tambaks.

This report, the 14th in our series of adoption studies, documents the adoption results for four ACIAR projects completed in 2012–13. The studies involved three partner countries— Bangladesh, Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Indonesia. The projects involved wheat in Bangladesh, broiler chickens in PNG, cattle in Lombok, Indonesia, and forestry in PNG.

During the next 10 years ACIAR’s capacity building will deliver a range of innovative capacity building approaches, focused at multiple-levels (individual, organisational and institutional), and promoting gender equity, for effective international agricultural research for development in the Indo–Pacific region.

This impact assessment of giant clam research in the Indo-Pacific region is a valuable historical compendium of the ACIAR sponsored work undertaken over 25 years. The authors have drawn together a wide-ranging evaluation of the work from biological, ecological and socioeconomic perspectives. There is no doubt that the work has led to the establishment of a vast body of knowledge about giant clam biology, markets, and culturing techniques that has contributed to ongoing efforts to conserve the species and continued research capacity in the Indo-Pacific.

This report, the 13th in our series of adoption studies, documents the adoption results for five ACIAR projects completed in 2011–12. They involved five partner countries: Papua New Guinea (PNG), Indonesia, the Philippines, Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) and India.

Since 1990, ACIAR has supported more than 100 research projects and collaboration with Lao PDR and invested more than A$50 million on these research partnerships. Our mandate is to amplify the impact of Australia’s exceptional capabilities in agricultural science by brokering and funding agricultural research for development partnerships in developing countries like Lao PDR.

The policy brief summarizes findings, outcomes and recommendations from a research project on groundwater irrigation implemented through the collaboration of institutions from Lao, Thailand and Japan and the International Water Management Institute, and is provided at the request of Lao PDR’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

  This report assesses capacity building from institutional and individual perspectives, and aims: To better understand the medium- and long-term benefits of formal and informal capacity building in institutions.  To better understand the career paths of ACIAR-funded scholars, presenting case studies of John Allwright Fellows (JAFs) and John Dillon Fellows (JDFs) from key institutes. To improve project design and report pro-forma to better include capacity building.

  Bilateral projects sponsored by the Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research (ACIAR) typically fund activities across a spectrum, including human capacity building and the development of farm ready technologies, in pursuit of economic, social and environmental benefits. In the interests of better project design, IAS93 enquires about the impact of these investments through the assesment of three case studies.

ACIAR has supported a program of research collaboration with Pakistan since 1984, with recent projects focused on Pakistan’s key fruit crops (mangoes and citrus), livestock (smallholder dairy), agricultural policy, and agricultural water management. ACIAR works closely with the Government of Pakistan, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), other donor partners, non-government organisations (NGOs) and the Pakistani private sector to provide research and development (R&D) and technical capacity building.

This study highlights the diversity of farming systems in Ethiopia and their significance as a basis for planning agriculture-led development interventions in diverse landscapes. This report has been developed as an output of the ACIAR Small Research Activity (SRA) ‘Farming systems approach to supporting national CAADP [Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme] investment planning for sustainable intensification and climate-smart agriculture in Africa’.

The scoping study was conducted in July 2016 and included three phases: (i) a desk review and interviews with Australia-based partners; (ii) a one-week visit to Sri Lanka for consultations with government officials, private sector representatives and university staff; and (iii) prioritisation of the demands and needs of potential partners with a focus on poverty alleviation for female and male smallholders farmers/fishers.
