Smallholder maize cultivation in the northern uplands of Vietnam and Laos is expanding onto sloping lands, a practice characterised by high rates of run-off, soil erosion and nutrient loss that quickly lead to declining soil fertility and maize yields. This project aims to promote the adoption of improved and diversified maize-based farming systems that reduce soil degradation and improve smallholder livelihoods and economic viability on sloping lands in the northern mountains of Vietnam and Laos.

This project was identifying and facilitating adoption of technologies and strategies for sustainable groundwater utilisation and developing options for improving the productivity of soils in South Central Coastal Vietnam (SCC VN) and Western Australia (WA).  Almost 70% of the nine million people living in SSC VN earn a living from agriculture. Given that rural poverty is high, improving returns from agricultural production is vital to improving livelihoods in the region. 

Increasing profitability and sustainability of intensive and emerging cropping systems in Bangladesh.

This project aimed to build capacity of researchers, farmers, farming communities and relevant government and non-government agencies to improve groundwater management in ways that enhance farming family livelihoods in Pakistan. Building capacity means building skills, knowledge and confidence, and providing relevant tools and processes. Pakistan’s population of over 180 million relies heavily on agriculture, which contributes 21 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product and more than 40 percent of its employment.

Improving the income of smallholder cattle producers through intensification of beef cattle production and increased market linkages in mountainous crop-livestock systems in the north-west of Vietnam.

Improving the profitability of beef cattle production of small-scale beef producers in Indonesia through the development of simple cost-effective feed rations.

This program was part of the Australia Food Security Initiative for Africa. It built substantially on completed ACIAR projects in Kenya, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It focused on maize as the main staple and legumes as an important dietary protein source for the rural poor. Combined rainfed maize-legume cropping systems show considerable promise in boosting productivity and helping reverse the decline in soil fertility that is a fundamental cause of low smallholder productivity in the region.

Improving the net income and livelihoods of smallholders by increasing the competitiveness of selected mango value chains in 2 provinces in southern Vietnam.

This project created a monitoring and social learning system to improve agricultural irrigation water productivity in Malawi, South Africa, and Tanzania. The Virtual Irrigation Academy (VIA) combined new irrigation monitoring tools with an online communication and learning system.
