Analysis of nutritional constraints to cocoa production in Papua New Guinea

The objective of this study was to provide the information necessary to design and target R&D investments into soil fertility and crop nutrition management in cocoa production systems of PNG. Cocoa is the primary cash crop in most coastal areas of Papua New Guinea (PNG), bringing in earnings of around K168 million per annum. The possibility of nutrition-related limitations to productivity had been raised in the past but not examined in detail.

Australia–China linkage for enhanced rice cold-tolerance

This project aimed to enhance linkages between Australian and Chinese rice research programs with a specific focus on improving rice cold tolerance. Rice cold tolerance is a major constraint to production in temperate rice-producing areas of the world. The opportunity to extend scientific interaction through projects such as this are particularly important for the Australian rice industry. It facilitates communication between Australian rice scientists and those in the major rice producing regions, such as China, and

Assessment of zoonotic diseases in Indonesia

This project aimed to collect data and information on zoonotic diseases in Indonesia with a focus on diseases that have measurable impact on livestock production and human health. The project results intended to inform prioritisation and design of future efforts to assist Indonesia in control and prevention of zoonotic diseases. Limited data were available for analysis to aid in identifying priorities and constraints and effort was also directed towards accessing expert opinion and discussion on issues wherever possible.

Assessing the South-East Asian tropical lobster supply and major market demands

This project aimed to improve the sustainability of a large and well developed, but low technology, ornate spiny lobster grow-out industry in Vietnam, and to address the knowledge gap that is limiting the establishment of a P. ornatus grow-out industry in Australia. With most capture lobster fisheries either fully or more often over-exploited, and in decline, aquaculture appears to be the only long-term way of meeting the insatiable market demand for lobster.

Assessing the potential for low cost formulated diets for mud crab aquaculture in Australia, Indonesia and Vietnam

This project aimed to commence diet development research for mud crabs in Australia, Vietnam and Indonesia. Mud crab farming is well established throughout South-East Asia with most mud crab farmers using trash fish, bivalve meats or animal by-products as feeds. This traditional feeding practice is unsustainable and the development of low-cost, formulated diets for grow-out is viewed as a priority research issue.

Assessing economic and welfare values of fish in the Lower Mekong Basin

This project aimed to quantify the multiple values of fish resources, interpret findings, analyse implications, and convey high level results and implications to national decision-makers, development agencies and local actors, for sustainable and improved rural livelihoods. Freshwater capture fisheries in the Lower Mekong Basin provide 47 to 80% of the animal protein consumed, as well as livelihood opportunities.

Applying wheat quality markers in India

This project aimed to provide opportunities for breeding and developing biscuit cultivars. In the long term, it aimed to serve as a model for integrating cross prediction technologies into Indian wheat breeding. Biscuits are widely consumed in India, but elite biscuit quality cultivars are not available to Indian farmers or industry. Australia has elite biscuit cultivars that are expected to perform at levels beyond those of landraces and many other potential sources of genes needed to develop biscuit cultivars adapted to Indian conditions.

Agricultural trade liberalisation and domestic market reforms in Indian agriculture

This project aimed to examine the nature and impact of interventions in selected agricultural markets, to analyse marketing system constraints, to identify, evaluate and quantify the impact of domestic market and international trade policy reforms and, to develop and disseminate appropriate policy recommendations. With a particular focus on the interaction of trade liberalisation (reforms at the 'border') with internal ('behind the border') reforms, the project was conceived and designed to contribute to the policy challenge of devising reforms
